An off-duty Toms River police officer who smashed into her ex-boyfriend’s Berkeley Township home and assaulted him and his girlfriend has pleaded guilty, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Rebecca Sayegh, 32, pleaded guilty Monday to burglary, criminal mischief, and simple assault before Superior Court Judge Guy P. Ryan. Prosecutors are seeking 180 days in jail, no-contact orders, restitution, and note that Sayegh has forfeited her job and all future public employment in New Jersey.
Prosecutors say Sayegh went to the Evernhan Avenue home around 11 p.m. on April 24, smashed the glass front door, entered, and began yelling at the couple before the confrontation turned physical. During the struggle, her nail scratched the girlfriend’s eye as she allegedly continued breaking items and throwing objects.
The victims escaped and called police. When officers arrived, Sayegh was exiting the garage and became irate, yelling profanities and struggling as she was arrested. At one point, she threatened to “burn the –– house down,” according to the affidavit.
Sayegh, who had dated the victim for five years and previously lived at the home, still had belongings inside, her attorney said. Bodycam footage captured her saying they had been broken up for two years.
Damage to the home is estimated at $2,000, with another $500 in damage to a vehicle.
Sentencing is scheduled for January 16.
