Camden Firefighter Dies After Being Trapped Beneath Ice On Delaware River
What started as a routine morning on the Delaware River turned into an unthinkable loss for Camden.
A Camden firefighter died Thursday morning after becoming trapped beneath the ice during a routine maintenance check of a fire boat at Wiggins Marina. What should have been a standard operation quickly escalated into a life-or-death emergency.
Fire crews launched a frantic search after realizing the firefighter had gone into the water. According to Fire Chief Jesse Flax, the firefighter was submerged for approximately 30 minutes before being located and pulled from the icy river.
The firefighter was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. His name has not yet been released. Camden Mayor Victor Carstarphen said the fallen firefighter was a husband and father, turning this tragedy into a devastating loss for a family, a fire department, and the entire city.
āI do not have enough words that I could even say that could tell you how this is hurting all of us,ā Chief Flax said.
Officials have not released further details as the incident remains under review. Flags and hearts are lowered across Camden as the city mourns a firefighter who never made it home.
